Toward a Full Configurational Accuracy Calculation of an Arbitrary Molecule via Fragment Embedding and a Stochastic Solver.

We demonstrate the feasibility of using a stochastic solver, full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo with the initiator approximation (i-FCIQMC), to converge fragment embedding calculations, namely bootstrap embedding (BE). We first propose and test a general protocol for converging BE-i-FCIQMC calculations and then suggest how the quality of the calculation compares against that of deterministic BE-FCI using different numbers of walkers. We then demonstrate that BE-i-FCIQMC can perform as well as BE-FCI in the large walker limit and how different factors, including the size of the Hilbert space of the fragments, the number of walkers, and the nature of the chemical system, affect the achievable matching error. We finally perform BE-FCI calculations in realistic systems like benzene and cyclohexane using a double-ζ basis set. This work demonstrates the potential of performing FCI quality calculations in realistic systems using BE.

Toward a Stochastic Complete Active Space Second-Order Perturbation Theory.

In this work, an internally contracted stochastic complete active space second-order perturbation theory, stochastic-CASPT2, is reported. The method relies on stochastically sampled reduced density matrices (RDMs) up to rank four and contractions thereof with the generalized Fock matrix. A new protocol for calculating higher-order RDMs in full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo (FCIQMC) has been designed based on (1) restricting sampling of the corresponding excitations to a deterministic subspace, (2) averaging the RDMs from independent dynamics and (3) projecting them onto the closest positive semi-definite matrix. Our protocol avoids previously encountered numerical conditioning problems in the orthogonalization of the perturber overlap matrix stemming from numerical noise. The chromium dimer CASSCF(12,12)/CASPT2 binding curve is computed as a proof of concept.

Exploiting Locality in Full Configuration Interaction Quantum Monte Carlo for Fast Excitation Generation.

In this paper, we propose an improved excitation generation algorithm for the full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo method, which is particularly effective in systems described by localized orbitals. The method is an extension of the precomputed heat-bath strategy of Holmes et al., with more effective sampling of double excitations and a novel approach for nonuniform sampling of single excitations. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the algorithm for a chain of 30 hydrogen atoms with atom-localized orbitals, a stack of benzene molecules, and an Fe(II)-porphyrin model complex, whereby we show an overall efficiency gain by a factor of two to four, as measured by variance reduction per wall-clock time.

Electronic Free Energy Surface of the Nitrogen Dimer Using First-Principles Finite Temperature Electronic Structure Methods.

We use full configuration interaction and density matrix quantum Monte Carlo methods to calculate the electronic free energy surface of the nitrogen dimer within the free-energy Born-Oppenheimer approximation. As the temperature is raised from T = 0, we find a temperature regime in which the internal energy causes bond strengthening. At these temperatures, adding in the entropy contributions is required to cause the bond to gradually weaken with increasing temperature. We predict a thermally driven dissociation for the nitrogen dimer between 22,000 to 63,200 K depending on symmetries and basis set. Inclusion of more spatial and spin symmetries reduces the temperature required. The origin of these observations is explored using the structure of the density matrix at various temperatures and bond lengths.

Optimizing Jastrow factors for the transcorrelated method.

We investigate the optimization of flexible tailored real-space Jastrow factors for use in the transcorrelated (TC) method in combination with highly accurate quantum chemistry methods, such as initiator full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo (FCIQMC). Jastrow factors obtained by minimizing the variance of the TC reference energy are found to yield better, more consistent results than those obtained by minimizing the variational energy. We compute all-electron atomization energies for the challenging first-row molecules C2, CN, N2, and O2 and find that the TC method yields chemically accurate results using only the cc-pVTZ basis set, roughly matching the accuracy of non-TC calculations with the much larger cc-pV5Z basis set. We also investigate an approximation in which pure three-body excitations are neglected from the TC-FCIQMC dynamics, saving storage and computational costs, and show that it affects relative energies negligibly. Our results demonstrate that the combination of tailored real-space Jastrow factors with the multi-configurational TC-FCIQMC method provides a route to obtaining chemical accuracy using modest basis sets, obviating the need for basis-set extrapolation and composite techniques.

Magnetic Interactions in a [Co(II)3Er(III)(OR)4] Model Cubane through Forefront Multiconfigurational Methods

Strong electron correlation effects are one of the major challenges in modern quantum chemistry. Polynuclear transition metal clusters are peculiar examples of systems featuring such forms of electron correlation. Multireference strategies, often based on but not limited to the concept of complete active space, are adopted to accurately account for strong electron correlation and to resolve their complex electronic structures. However, transition metal clusters already containing four magnetic centers with multiple unpaired electrons make conventional active space based strategies prohibitively expensive, due to their unfavorable scaling with the size of the active space. In this work, forefront techniques, such as density matrix renormalization group (DMRG), full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo (FCIQMC), and multiconfiguration pair-density functional theory (MCPDFT), are employed to overcome the computational limitation of conventional multireference approaches and to accurately investigate the magnetic interactions taking place in a [Co(II)3Er(III)(OR)4] (chemical formula [Co(II)3Er(III)(hmp)4(μ2-OAc)2(OH)3(H2O)], hmp = 2-(hydroxymethyl)-pyridine) model cubane water oxidation catalyst. Complete active spaces with up to 56 electrons in 56 orbitals have been constructed for the seven energetically lowest different spin states. Relative energies, local spin, and spin-spin correlation values are reported and provide crucial insights on the spin interactions for this model system, pivotal in the rationalization of the catalytic activity of this system in the water-splitting reaction. A ferromagnetic ground state is found with a very small, ∼50 cm-1, highest-to-lowest spin gap. Moreover, for the energetically lowest states, S = 3-6, the three Co(II) sites exhibit parallel aligned spins, and for the lower states, S = 0-2, two Co(II) sites retain strong parallel spin alignment.

Ferromagnetic domains in the large- U Hubbard model with a few holes: A full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo study

Two-dimensional Hubbard lattices with two or three holes are investigated as a function of $U$ in the large-$U$ limit. In the so-called Nagaoka limit (one-hole system at infinite $U$), it is known that the Hubbard model exhibits a ferromagnetic ground state. Here, by means of exact full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo simulations applied to periodic lattices up to 24 sites, we compute spin-spin correlation functions as a function of increasing $U$. The correlation functions clearly demonstrate the onset of ferromagnetic domains, centered on individual holes. The overall total spin of the wave functions remains the lowest possible (0 or $\frac{1}{2}$, depending on the number of holes). The ferromagnetic domains appear at interaction strengths comparable to the critical interaction strengths of the Nagaoka transition in finite systems with strictly one hole. The existence of such ferromagnetic domains is the signature of Nagaoka physics in Hubbard systems with a small (but greater than 1) number of holes.

General Analytical Nuclear Forces and Molecular Potential Energy Surface from Full Configuration Interaction Quantum Monte Carlo.

The full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo (FCIQMC) is a state-of-the-art stochastic electronic structure method, providing a methodology to compute FCI-level state energies of molecular systems within a quantum chemical basis. However, especially to probe dynamics at the FCIQMC level, it is necessary to devise more efficient schemes to produce nuclear forces and potential energy surfaces (PES) from FCIQMC. In this work, we derive the general formula for nuclear forces from FCIQMC, and clarify different contributions of the total force. This method to obtain FCIQMC forces eliminates previous restrictions and can be used with frozen core approximation and free selection of orbitals, making it promising for more efficient nuclear forces calculations. After some numerical checks of this procedure on the binding curve of N2 molecule, we use the FCIQMC energy and force to obtain the full-dimensional ground state PES of the water molecule via Gaussian processes regression. The new water FCIQMC PES can be used as the basis for H2O ground state nuclear dynamics, structure optimization, and rotation-vibrational spectrum calculation.

Full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo for coupled electron-boson systems and infinite spaces

We extend the scope of full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo (FCIQMC) to be applied to coupled fermion-boson hamiltonians, alleviating the a priori truncation in boson occupation which is necessary for many other wave function based approaches to be tractable. Detailing the required algorithmic changes for efficient excitation generation, we apply FCIQMC in two contrasting settings. The first is a sign-problem-free Hubbard--Holstein model of local electron-phonon interactions, where we show that with care to control for population bias via importance sampling and/or reweighting, the method can achieve unbiased energies extrapolated to the thermodynamic limit, without suffering additional computational overheads from relaxing boson occupation constraints. Secondly, we apply the method as a `solver' within a quantum embedding scheme which maps electronic systems to local electron-boson auxiliary models, with the bosons representing coupling to long-range plasmonic-like fluctuations. We are able to sample these general electron-boson hamiltonians with ease despite a formal sign problem, including a faithful reconstruction of converged reduced density matrices of the system.

Importance-sampling FCIQMC: Solving weak sign-problem systems.

We investigate the exact full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo algorithm (without the initiator approximation) applied to weak sign-problem fermionic systems, namely, systems in which the energy gap to the corresponding sign-free or "stoquastized" state is small. We show that the minimum number of walkers required to exactly overcome the signproblem can be significantly reduced via an importance-sampling similarity transformation even though the similarity-transformed Hamiltonian has the same stoquastic gap as the untransformed one. Furthermore, we show that in the off-half-filling Hubbard model at U/t = 8, the real-space (site) representation has a much weaker signproblem compared to the momentum space representation. By applying importance sampling using a Gutzwiller-like guiding wavefunction, we are able to substantially reduce the minimum number of walkers in the case of 2 × ℓ Hubbard ladders, enabling us to get exact energies for sizable ladders. With these results, we calculate the fundamental charge gap ΔEfund = E(N + 1) + E(N - 1) - 2E(N) for the ladder systems compared to strictly one-dimensional Hubbard chains and show that the ladder systems have a reduced fundamental gap compared to the 1D chains.

Coupled Cluster Benchmarking of Large Noncovalent Complexes in L7 and S12L as Well as the C60 Dimer, DNA-Ellipticine, and HIV-Indinavir.

In this work, we report the benchmark binding energies of the seven complexes within the L7 data set, six host-guest complexes from the S12L data set, a C60 dimer, the DNA-ellipticine intercalation complex, and the largest system of the study, the HIV-indinavir system, which contained 343 atoms or 139 heavy atoms. The high-quality values reported were obtained via a focal point method that relies on the canonical form of second-order Møller-Plesset theory and the domain-based local pair natural orbital scheme for the coupled cluster with single double and perturbative triple excitations [DLPNO-CCSD(T)] extrapolated to the complete basis set (CBS) limit. The results in this work not only corroborate but also improve upon some previous benchmark values for large noncovalent complexes albeit at a relatively steep cost. Although local CCSD(T) and the largely successful fixed-node diffusion Monte Carlo (FN-DMC) have been shown to generally agree for small- to medium-size systems, a discrepancy in their reported binding energy values arises for large complexes, where the magnitude of the disagreement is a definite cause for concern. For example, the largest deviation in the L7 data set was 2.8 kcal/mol (∼10%) on the low end in C3GC. Such a deviation only grows worse in the S12L set, which showed a difference of up to 10.4 kcal/mol (∼25%) by a conservative estimation in buckycatcher-C60. The DNA-ellipticine complex also generated a disagreement of 4.4 kcal/mol (∼10%) between both state-of-the-art methods. The disagreement between local CCSD(T) and FN-DMC in large noncovalent complexes shows that it is urgently needed to have the canonical CCSD(T), the Monte Carlo CCSD(T), or the full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo approaches available to large systems on the hundred-atom scale to solve this dilemma. In addition, the performances of cheaper popular computational methods were assessed for the studied complexes with respect to DLPNO-CCSD(T)/CBS. r2SCAN-3c, B97M-V, and PBE0+D4 work well in large noncovalent complexes in this work, and GFN2-xTB performs well in π-π stacking complexes. B97M-V is the most reliable computationally efficient approach to predicting noncovalent interactions for large complexes, being the only one to have binding errors within the so-called 1 kcal/mol "chemical accuracy". The benchmark interaction energies of these host-guest complexes, molecular materials, and biological systems with electronic and medicinal implications provide crucial reference data for the improvement of current and future lower-cost methods.

Stochastic differential equation approach to understanding the population control bias in full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo

We investigate a systematic statistical bias found in full configuration quantum Monte Carlo (FCIQMC) that originates from controlling a walker population with a fluctuating shift parameter. This bias can become the dominant error when the sign problem is absent, e.g., in bosonic systems. FCIQMC is a powerful statistical method for obtaining information about the ground state of a sparse and abstract matrix. We show that, when the sign problem is absent, the shift estimator has the nice property of providing an upper bound for the exact ground-state energy and all projected energy estimators, while a variational estimator is still an upper bound to the exact energy with substantially reduced bias. A scalar model of the general FCIQMC population dynamics leads to an exactly solvable It\^o stochastic differential equation. It provides further insights into the nature of the bias and gives accurate analytical predictions for delayed cross-covariance and autocovariance functions of the shift energy estimator and the walker number. The model provides a toehold on finding a cure for the population control bias. We provide evidence for nonuniversal power-law scaling of the population control bias with walker number in the Bose-Hubbard model for various estimators of the ground-state energy based on the shift or on projected energies. For the specific case of the noninteracting Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian we obtain a full analytical prediction for the bias of the shift energy estimator.

Performance of a one-parameter correlation factor for transcorrelation: Study on a series of second row atomic and molecular systems.

In this work, we investigate the performance of a recently proposed transcorrelated (TC) approach based on a single-parameter correlation factor [E. Giner, J. Chem. Phys. 154, 084119 (2021)] for systems involving more than two electrons. The benefit of such an approach relies on its simplicity as efficient numerical-analytical schemes can be set up to compute the two- and three-body integrals occurring in the effective TC Hamiltonian. To obtain accurate ground state energies within a given basis set, the present TC scheme is coupled to the recently proposed TC-full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo method [Cohen et al., J. Chem. Phys. 151, 061101 (2019)]. We report ground state total energies on the Li-Ne series, together with their first cations, computed with increasingly large basis sets and compare to more elaborate correlation factors involving electron-electron-nucleus coordinates. Numerical results on the Li-Ne ionization potentials show that the use of the single-parameter correlation factor brings on average only a slightly lower accuracy (1.2 mH) in a triple-zeta quality basis set with respect to a more sophisticated correlation factor. However, already using a quadruple-zeta quality basis set yields results within chemical accuracy to complete basis set limit results when using this novel single-parameter correlation factor. Calculations on the H2O, CH2, and FH molecules show that a similar precision can be obtained within a triple-zeta quality basis set for the atomization energies of molecular systems.

Combined unitary and symmetric group approach applied to low-dimensional Heisenberg spin systems

A novel combined unitary and symmetric group approach is used to study the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg model and related Fermionic systems in a total spin-adapted representation, using a linearly-parameterised Ansatz for the many-body wave function. We show that a more compact ground-state wave function representation---indicated by a larger leading ground-state coefficient---is obtained when combining the symmetric group ${\mathcal{S}}_{n}$, in the form of permutations of the underlying lattice site ordering, with the cumulative spin coupling based on the unitary group $\mathrm{U}(n)$. In one-dimensional systems the observed compression of the wave function is reminiscent of block-spin renormalization group approaches, and allows us to study larger lattices (here taken up to 80 sites) with the spin-adapted full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo method, which benefits from the sparsity of the Hamiltonian matrix and the corresponding sampled eigenstates that emerge from the reordering. We find that in an optimal lattice ordering the configuration state function with highest weight already captures with high accuracy the spin-spin correlation function of the exact ground-state wave function. This feature is found for more general lattice models, such as the Hubbard model, and ab initio quantum chemical models, exemplified by one-dimensional hydrogen chains. We also provide numerical evidence that the optimal lattice ordering for the unitary group approach is not generally equivalent to the optimal ordering obtained for methods based on matrix-product states, such as the density-matrix renormalization group approach.

Making the most of data: Quantum Monte Carlo postanalysis revisited.

In quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) methods, energy estimators are calculated as (functions of) statistical averages of quantities sampled during a calculation. Associated statistical errors of these averages are often estimated. This error estimation is not straightforward and there are several choices of the error estimation methods. We evaluate the performance of three methods (the Straatsma method, an autoregressive model, and a blocking analysis based on von Neumann's ratio test for randomness) for the energy time series given by three QMC methods [diffusion Monte Carlo, full configuration interaction Quantum Monte Carlo (FCIQMC), and coupled cluster Monte Carlo (CCMC)]. From these analyses, we describe a hybrid analysis method which provides reliable error estimates for a series of various lengths of FCIQMC and CCMC's time series. Equally important is the estimation of the appropriate start point of the equilibrated phase. We establish that a simple mean squared error rule method as described by White [K. P. White, Jr., Simulation 69(6), 323 (1997)10.1177/003754979706900601] can provide reasonable estimations.

Full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo treatment of fragments embedded in a periodic mean field.

We present an embedded fragment approach for high-level quantum chemical calculations on local features in periodic systems. The fragment is defined as a set of localized orbitals (occupied and virtual) corresponding to a converged periodic Hartree-Fock solution. These orbitals serve as the basis for the in-fragment post-Hartree-Fock treatment. The embedding field for the fragment, consisting of the Coulomb and exchange potential from the rest of the crystal, is included in the fragment's one-electron Hamiltonian. As an application of the embedded fragment approach, we investigate the performance of full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo (FCIQMC) with the adaptive shift. As the orbital choice, we use the natural orbitals from the distinguishable cluster method with singles and doubles. FCIQMC is a stochastic approximation to the full CI method and can be routinely applied to much larger active spaces than the latter. This makes this method especially attractive in the context of open shell defects in crystals, where fragments of adequate size can be rather large. As a test case, we consider dissociation of a fluorine atom from a fluorographane surface. This process poses a challenge for high-level electronic structure models as both the static and dynamic correlations are essential here. Furthermore, the active space for an adequate fragment (32 electrons in 173 orbitals) is already quite large even for FCIQMC. Despite this, FCIQMC delivers accurate dissociation and total energies.

Polaron-Depleton Transition in the Yrast Excitations of a One-Dimensional Bose Gas with a Mobile Impurity

We present exact numerical data for the lowest-energy momentum eigenstates (yrast states) of a repulsive spin impurity in a one-dimensional Bose gas using full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo (FCIQMC). As a stochastic extension of exact diagonalization, it is well suited for the study of yrast states of a lattice-renormalized model for a quantum gas. Yrast states carry valuable information about the dynamic properties of slow-moving mobile impurities immersed in a many-body system. Based on the energies and the first and second-order correlation functions of yrast states, we identify different dynamical regimes and the transitions between them: The polaron regime, where the impurity’s motion is affected by the Bose gas through a renormalized effective mass; a regime of a gray soliton that is weakly correlated with a stationary impurity, and the depleton regime, where the impurity occupies a dark or gray soliton. Extracting the depleton effective mass reveals a super heavy regime where the magnitude of the (negative) depleton mass exceeds the mass of the finite Bose gas.

Benchmark study of Nagaoka ferromagnetism by spin-adapted full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo

We investigate Nagaoka ferromagnetism in the two-dimensional Hubbard model with one hole using the spin-adapted ($SU(2)$ conserving) full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo method. This methodology gives us access to the ground state energies of all possible spin states $S$ of finite Hubbard lattices, here obtained for lattices up to 24 sites, for various interaction strengths ($U$). The critical interaction strength, $U_c$, at which the Nagaoka transition occurs is determined for each lattice and is found to be proportional to the lattice size for the larger lattices. Below $U_c$ the overall ground states are found to favour the minimal total spin ($S=\frac 1 2$), and no intermediate spin state is found to be the overall ground state on lattices larger than 16 sites. However, at $U_c$, the energies of all the spin states are found to be nearly degenerate, implying that large fluctuations in total spin can be expected in the vicinity of the Nagaoka transition.

Fixed- and Partial-Node Approximations in Slater Determinant Space for Molecules.

We present a study of fixed- and partial-node approximations in Slater determinant basis sets, using full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo (FCIQMC) to perform sampling. Walker annihilation in the FCIQMC method allows partial-node simulations to be performed, relaxing the nodal constraint to converge to the FCI solution. This is applied to ab initio molecular systems, using symmetry-projected Jastrow mean-field wave functions for complete active space (CAS) problems. Convergence and the sign problem within the partial-node approximation are studied, which is shown to eventually be limited in its use due to the large walker populations required. However, the fixed-node approximation results in an accurate and practical method. We apply these approaches to various molecular systems and active spaces, including ferrocene and acenes. This also provides a test of symmetry-projected Jastrow mean-field wave functions in variational Monte Carlo for a new set of problems. For trans-polyacetylene molecules and acenes, we find that the time to perform a constant number of fixed-node FCIQMC iterations scales as and , respectively, resulting in an efficient method for CAS-based problems that can be applied accurately to large active spaces.

Spin-Pure Stochastic-CASSCF via GUGA-FCIQMC Applied to Iron-Sulfur Clusters.

In this work, we demonstrate how to efficiently compute the one- and two-body reduced density matrices within the spin-adapted full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo (FCIQMC) method, which is based on the graphical unitary group approach (GUGA). This allows us to use GUGA-FCIQMC as a spin-pure configuration interaction (CI) eigensolver within the complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) procedure and hence to stochastically treat active spaces far larger than conventional CI solvers while variationally relaxing orbitals for specific spin-pure states. We apply the method to investigate the spin ladder in iron–sulfur dimer and tetramer model systems. We demonstrate the importance of the orbital relaxation by comparing the Heisenberg model magnetic coupling parameters from the CASSCF procedure to those from a CI-only (CASCI) procedure based on restricted open-shell Hartree–Fock orbitals. We show that the orbital relaxation differentially stabilizes the lower-spin states, thus enlarging the coupling parameters with respect to the values predicted by ignoring orbital relaxation effects. Moreover, we find that, while CASCI results are well fit by a simple bilinear Heisenberg Hamiltonian, the CASSCF eigenvalues exhibit deviations that necessitate the inclusion of biquadratic terms in the model Hamiltonian.
